Air Balance Induction System

Air balance induction system speaks to what is an induction air system for a building and how to air balance the system.

Induction systems are used primarily on perimeter systems in hospitals and larger office buildings. Induction units are normally 100% outside air systems.

Check and note the following items on the supply and return fans.

  • Correct fan rotation.
  • Filter condition.
  • Cooling coil condition. The following preliminary data should be obtained at the supply fan before the air balance begins.
  • Fan and motor RPM.
  • Motor current and voltage.
  • Fan, coils and filter static pressure.
  • Nameplate data on the fan and motor.
  • Motor sheave, fan pulley and belt sizes.

Traverse the main supply duct after you are certain induction units are open.

Adjust the fan delivery to approximately 15 to 20% above design. The fan delivery should be set high because balancing the induction units will normally increase the total fan static pressure significantly and cause the fan delivery to decrease.

The following final data should be obtained at the supply fan.

  • Fan and motor RPM.
  • Motor current and voltage.
  • Fan, coils and filter statics.
  • Motor sheave position.
  • Check the following controls.
  • Face and bypass damper - function and calibration.
  • High temperature limit shutoff - function and calibration.
  • Low temperature limit shutoff - function and calibration.
