This style was popular from the 1920s to about 1945. This eclectic style borrows its taste for simplicity, smooth surfaces and asymmetrical balance from the nascent modernism of European avant-garde architects but without completely shunning ornament.
The Moderne style share with its sibling, the art deco style, a preference for reflective materials, particularly on interior public spaces, so that highly polished wood veneers and new manufactured materials such as polished metal, frosted glass, glossy black Bakelite, glass blocks and tube neon lighting provide for exciting luminescence.
The popularity of mass produced materials reflected a convergence of architecture and industrial design. The celebration of bare unadorned surfaces, whose attraction lay in the simple beauty of frankly expressed materials and simplicity of form is what differs the Moderne from the highly decorative Art Deco.
In North America the aerodynamic forms with rounded corners and horizontal massing accentuated by applied “speed-stripe” markings and the flat roof were especially popular for commercial buildings such as shops, restaurants, gas stations, bus depots as well as for industrial developments. A few progressive and daring house owners also enjoyed the sleek modern shapes and sunny interiors of this style also referred to as depression modern, horizontal deco or streamlined modern.
